Letter to myself
Session 1.1 – Let’s get started!
This activity uses an online tool to write a reflective letter to your future self. It helps you clarify your hopes, concerns, and intended actions around sustainability and your role in shaping the future.
- Choose your time horizon
Decide when your letter will be delivered. We recommend:
- 1 year — short-term reflection and habit tracking
- 5 years — medium-term personal/professional trajectory
- 25 years — intergenerational perspective and long-term sustainability vision
- Write your letter (15–30 minutes)
Go to www.futureme.org, click “Write a letter to the future,” and compose your letter.
Use these prompts as guides:
- Where are you right now in your personal and professional sustainability journey?
- What do you hope to have accomplished in your role as an educator, leader, or learner by then?
- What challenges concern you today? How do you hope to have addressed them?
- What might the world—and your field—look like then? What role have you played?
- Which values or principles should guide your decisions between now and then?
- Send it to the Future
Schedule the letter to be emailed to you using the FutureMe platform. You can make it private or public (anonymously).
Pause and Reflect
* How did it feel to write to yourself across time? What surprised you as you wrote—about your hopes, fears, or assumptions—and how did it shift your perspective?
* Were your visions more utopian, realistic, or dystopian? Why?
* Who or what will support your follow-through (people, tools, routines)?
* What moves might you make now to move closer to your envisioned future?
