Principles of responsible management (PRME)

PRME as a catalyst for change in education

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the need for sustainable development has never been more critical. The Principles for Responsible Management Education (PRME), is a global network of business schools and faculties committed to training the next generation of managers and business leaders to help build a sustainable global economy. As an initiative of the United Nations Global Compact, PRME champions responsible management education, research, and thought leadership. It encourages educational institutions to integrate universal values into their curricula and research, promoting a more inclusive and sustainable global economy.

PRME provides a comprehensive framework to address complex challenges faced by business and society in the 21st century, thereby supporting the achievement of the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) (see PRME, 2025). PRME acts as a catalyst and facilitator to accelerate and channel thinking about the future of business education (Alcaraz & Thiruvattal, 2010). It consists of different actors and groups within the network: PRME signatories, Champions, Regional Chapters, and issue-specific Working Groups (Ceulemans et al., 2022; Finstad-Million et al., 2021). This training has been developed within the PRME Champions cycle 2024–2025.

The SDGs, adopted by all United Nations Member States in 2015, consist of seventeen interlinked global goals designed as “a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.” They address a wide range of issues, including poverty, inequality, climate change, environmental degradation, peace, and justice. By integrating the SDGs into curricula and research, business and management schools play a crucial role in shaping a sustainable future and fostering ethical leadership. To achieve this vision, educators and students must develop competencies that enable them to anticipate and navigate future challenges effectively. This is where futures thinking and futures literacy play a crucial role.
