Letter to myself

Session 1.1 – Let’s get started!

This activity uses an online tool to write a reflective letter to your future self. It helps you clarify your hopes, concerns, and intended actions around sustainability and your role in shaping the future.

  1. Choose your time horizon

Decide when your letter will be delivered. We recommend:

  • 1 year — short-term reflection and habit tracking
  • 5 years — medium-term personal/professional trajectory
  • 25 years — intergenerational perspective and long-term sustainability vision
  1. Write your letter (15–30 minutes)

Go to www.futureme.org, click “Write a letter to the future,” and compose your letter.

Use these prompts as guides:

  • Where are you right now in your personal and professional sustainability journey?
  • What do you hope to have accomplished in your role as an educator, leader, or learner by then?
  • What challenges concern you today? How do you hope to have addressed them?
  • What might the world—and your field—look like then? What role have you played?
  • Which values or principles should guide your decisions between now and then?
  1. Send it to the Future

Schedule the letter to be emailed to you using the FutureMe platform. You can make it private or public (anonymously).

Pause and Reflect

* How did it feel to write to yourself across time? What surprised you as you wrote—about your hopes, fears, or assumptions—and how did it shift your perspective?
* Were your visions more utopian, realistic, or dystopian? Why?
* Who or what will support your follow-through (people, tools, routines)?
* What moves might you make now to move closer to your envisioned future?
